Who are Astounding Adventures?

Astounding Adventures are a collective of fully qualified mountain sport coaches based around the length and breadth of the British Isles. Rather than limiting ourselves to a single centre in a single area, our network of coaches are able to bring a wide range of mountain sports courses direct to your doorstep.

Our coaches and guides

Our coaching team have a combined mountain sports experience of over 200 years and are all qualified with National Governing Body (NGB) awards which, unlike non-NGB awards, are recognised nationwide by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority, Local Education Authorities and insurance companies.

Our coaches hold the following qualifications (where appropriate for the activity in question):

• Hill Walking (summer) - Mountain Leader Award and/or Mountain Instructor Award
• Hill Walking (winter) - Winter Mountain Leader Award and/or Mountain Instructor Certificate
• Mountain Biking - Trail Cycle Leader Award and/or Mountain Bike Leader Award and/or Skills Instructor Award
• Rock Climbing (summer) - Single Pitch Award and/or Mountain Instructor Award
• Rock Climbing (winter) - Mountain Instructor Certificate
• First Aid - Rescue Emergency Care Mountain First Aid Award or above
• First Aid Training - REC First Aid Instructor/Trainer
• Bike Mechanic - Cytech Level II Bike Technician Certificate

We also encourage our coaches to improve and expand upon their skills through a process of Continuous Professional Development (CPD). We advise all of our coaches to attend at least two CPD courses every year.

Examples of CPDs held by our coaches include - Safeguarding and Protecting Children, Equity in Your Coaching and How to Coach Disabled people in Sport.

The Institute for Outdoor Learning encourages outdoor learning by developing quality, safety and opportunity to experience outdoor activity provision and by supporting and enhancing the good practice of those who work in the outdoors.
