Introduction to lead climbing
Course description
So you're a regular at your local wall and perhaps you've tried your hand at bottom roping a single pitch climb or two; perhaps it's time to take things to the next level?
Our Introduction to Lead Climbing course will demonstrate the fundamentals of lead climbing and seconding at a single pitch crag whilst under the supervision of a fully qualified climbing coach.
Course outline
The skills taught and practiced on the course will include:
- Leader racks, gear selection & placement
- Seconding a lead climb; belaying & gear removal
- Constructing anchors & top roping
- Abseilling
Typical programme
Although the course is flexible it will usually keep to the following programme:
- Day one 9:30 Arrival at course venue and introductions
- Day one 9:30-10:00 Walk to the crag
- Day one 10:00-16:30 Rock climbing with a break for lunch
- Day one 16:30-17:00 Walk out from the crag
- Day one 17:00 Day ends
- Day two 9:00-9:30 Walk to the crag
- Day two 9:30-16:00 Rock climbing with a break for lunch
- Day two 16:00-16:30 Walk out from the crag
- Day two 16:30 Course ends

What's included?
YHA/guesthouse accommodation is included in the price. However, we do not provide transport to and from the venue or between venues.
Previous experience
You will be a competent belayer and have some experience of either indoor or outdoor climbing using a bottom roping system.
Preparation and fitness
The good news is that you don't have to be ultra-fit to get the most out of this course.
We'll be climbing for up to six hours, but not continuously as half the time we'll be belaying climbing partners.
Consolidation and practice
We recommend that you take what you've learned straight back down your local crag and practice as much as possible.
