Mountain Bike Skills Coaching: Night Riding Skills
Course description
Riding at night can add a wonderful new dimension to your riding. It sounds scary but, with a good light and bucket load of confidence, it can be one of the most rewarding ways to ride your mountain bike.
On our Night Riding Skills training course we'll take you on a three hour night MTB ride and give you lots of valuable information on how to make your future night rides successful.
Course outline
The skills taught and practiced on the Night Riding Skills course will include:
- Night riding clothing & equipment
- Planning a evening/night ride
- Navigating at night
- Group management at night
- Dealing with emergencies
Typical programme
Although the course is flexible it will usually keep to the following programme:
- 18:30 Arrival at course venue
- 19:00-19:30 Course commences, introductions and equipment check
- 19.30-20:00 A rough guide to night riding clothing & equipment
- 19.30-22:00 Night ride with stops for coaching sessions
- 22:00 Course ends

Previous experience
You must be a competent off-road mountain biker able to ride with confidence and commitment.
Preparation and fitness
The good news is that you don't have to be ultra-fit to get the most out of this course.
We will be riding our bikes for about three hours, though not constantly and at an easy pace.
We'll also be stopping regularly to coach skills.
Consolidation and practice
We recommend that you take what you've learned straight out on the trail at night confident that you have the skills to ride safely and with confidence.
Equipment required
Please refer to our equipment page for a complete list.
You will need a good quality front mountain bike light of at least 320 lumens. Hire an Exposure Diablo light (700 lumens) for £10.00
You won't need to carry tools, a trailside repair kit or a first aid kit as your coach will have all of these.
