Backcountry Mountain Bike Leader Skills: Bike Set-up and Trailside Repairs
Course description
How many times have you had a ride ruined by a broken chain or slipping gears? There's nothing more infuriating than a long walk out back to the trailhead, but what if the trailhead is 20 miles away?
Our Bike Set-up & Trailside Repairs training course will give you the skills prevent problems before they occur and to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat whether you are pottering about in your local woods or far from help on a challenging backcountry route.
Course outline
The skills taught and practiced on the Bike Set-up & Trailside Repairs course will include:
Bike Set-up
- The perfect riding position
- Setting up your suspension system
- Choosing the right tyre pressures
- Setting up and adjusting your gear system
- Setting up and adjusting your brake system
Trailside Repairs
- Fixing punctures on both tube & tubeless tyres
- Repairing a broken chain
- Singlespeeding a bike with a broken derailleur
- Repairing a broken free hub
- Straightening a buckled wheel
Typical programme
Although the course is flexible it will usually keep to the following programme:
- 9:00-9:30 Arrival at course venue
- 9:30-10:00 Course commences, introductions and equipment check
- 10:00-13:15 Easy paced ride with stops for trailside repair sessions
- 13:30 Course ends

Previous experience
No previous mountain bike experience is required, but you must be able to ride a bike with gears.
Preparation and fitness
The good news is that you don't have to be ultra-fit to get the most out of this course.
We will be riding our bikes for about four hours, though not constantly and at an easy pace.
We'll also be stopping regularly to coach skills.
Consolidation and practice
Practice your bodging skills as much as possible so they are second nature by the time they're next needed.

Please feel free to bring whatever mountain bike tools you have already along with a trailside repair/spares kit if you already have one.
