Navigation Skills: Mountains and Moors
Course description
Moving out of your hill walking comfort zone may have been something you dabbled with in the past; maybe you've climbed out of the valleys and up onto to moors once or twice, but navigating deep in the National Parks of England, Wales and Scotland can be extremely tricky; especially when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Our Navigation Skills: Mountains & Moors course takes the map and compass skills you already have and scale them up to blank openness of Dartmoor or the jagged summits of Snowdonia.
Course outline
The skills taught and practiced on the course will include:
- Advanced contour interpretation
- Navigating in poor visibility and at night
- Navigating across open moorland
- Advanced relocation techniques
Typical programme
Although the course is flexible it will usually keep to the following programme:
- 9:00-9:30 Arrival at course venue
- 9:30-13:00 Guided walk with navigation sessions and practice
- 13:00-14:00 Lunch
- 14:00-17:00 Guided walk with navigation sessions and practice

Duration
Full day course

3-6 students per coach
Previous experience
You must already be a relatively experienced lowland navigator.
You will get the most out of the course if you have already attended our Navigation Skills: Forests & Features course, although this is not mandatory.
Preparation and fitness
A good standard of fitness is required as we will be spending a full day out on the hills. However, we will be stopping regularly to coach skills.
Consolidation and practice
We recommend that you take what you've learned straight out on the trail and practice the skills as much as possible before moving up to the next course.
A walk in the countryside once or twice a week will help cement your new skills. Try to concentrate on the bits you have the most difficulty with as this will help them become second nature.
Equipment required
Please refer to our equipment page for a complete list.
You won't need to carry a map, compass, first aid kit or shelter as your guide will have all of this.
