Discover GPS
Course description
There's no getting away from it, some of us are total gadget freaks! We wander the hills with phones, iPods, solar chargers and, of course, the ubiquitous GPS. But all the gadgets in the world are just lumps of metal and plastic if you don't know how to use them.
Our Discover GPS course starts with the basics and builds up to some quite advanced electronic navigation with practical examples and plenty of time to practice on the hill.

- You and your GPS
- Basic navigation with a GPS

Previous experience
A GPS is not a replacement for compass and map so you must already be a competent upland navigator to attend the course.
You will get the most out of the course if you have already attended our Navigation Skills: Mountains & Moors course, although this is not mandatory.
Preparation and fitness
A good standard of fitness is required as we will be spending a full day out on the hills. However, we will be stopping regularly to coach skills.
Consolidation and practice
We recommend that you take what you've learned straight out on the trail and practice the skills as much as possible.
Try to concentrate on the bits you have the most difficulty with as this will help them become second nature.
Equipment required
Please refer to our equipment page for a complete list.
You won't need to carry a map, compass, first aid kit or shelter as your guide will have all of this.
